Saudi Interior Minister: Extremists Seek to Isolate Arab Nation From its Principles

In a conference of Arab interior ministers in Tunis, Saudi Interior Minister Prince Na'if bin Abdul Aziz referred to "the scope of ideas" of extremists who seek to "isolate the Arab nation from its venerable principles and values and replace them with the culture of violence and struggle under false slogans." These ideas, he said, are breaking through the mental barriers of individuals, leading them to commit "the crime of the age," meaning terrorism.

Basra Bazaars Do Booming Business for Ashura

The bazaars in the southern Iraqi city of Basra did exceptional business on the eve of Ashura, which is marked annually by the Shi'a community across the Muslim world as a 10-day period of mourning for the 6th-century murder of Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

Demand for black clothing is unprecedented, as is the demand for metal chains and swords which mourners use to beat their backs until bleeding, to identify with the blood of the martyr Hussein.

New York Protest, Wednesday, January 31, to Free Egyptian Blogger

From www.freekareem.org :

NEW YORK, Jan. 29, 2007 - Egyptian blogger Kareem Amer’s trial is scheduled for this Thursday. An informal group of New York City residents are joining together in solidarity for a peaceful protest of the government of Egypt’s treatment of Kareem, and to plead for all charges against him to be dropped. The protest has been organized for this Wednesday, January 31 at 3:30pm, in front of the Egyptian Consulate in New York.

Kareem has been imprisoned in Alexandria, Egypt, since November, after posting to his website statements calling for equal rights for women and protection of free speech, as well as other statements critical of the Egyptian government. He has been denied bail and faces a long prison sentence if convicted of the charges held against him. The New York group is trying to mobilize the national news media in hopes that increased visibility of Kareem’s circumstances will pressure the Egyptian government to act responsibly.

The Egyptian Consulate in New York is located at 1110 2nd Avenue, between E. 58th and E. 59th.

For more information about Kareem Amer, visit www.freekareem.org, and to sign an online petition to the Egyptian government, visit www.petitiononline.com/kamer .

Al-Arabiya: Al-Zawra to Begin Broadcasting from France

According to Al-Arabiya.net, the Islamist channel Al-Zawraa will begin broadcasting from France in four or five days.

According to an interview with channel owner Mish'an Jabouri, France will be the channel's "main" broadcasting center, and the channel is moving from the Egyptian Nilesat to Arabsat. Al-Jabouri said this was because while Egypt, under U.S. pressure, has refused to accept new material from Al-Zawraa and has been airing the same footage, Arabsat has set no conditions.

Jabouri said that in the future he planned more studios in Europe, and claimed that the channel does not use the term rawafidh for Shi'ites. He also claimed that the channel does not air Al-Qaeda footage, though it does receive it.

According to its website, Arabsat is an intergovernmental organization "founded by the Arab League in 1976" and governed by its General Assembly, Board of Directors and Management Committee. Its General Assembly, which is "the main organ of Arabsat by virtue of its power as defined in Arabsat's Charter, comprises the communications ministers of the Arab member countries, or their representatives."
