Speaking for a European parliamentary delegation that visited Turkey, European parliamentarian Bernard Jean Marie warned of the “negative impression” given by the deteriorating situation of the Kurds in Turkey. He said their “poor situation in Turkey raises questions regarding Turkey’s commitment to the principles of Copenhagen which determine the conditions that Turkey should meet before joining the unified European entity.”

The Arab summit’s final statement confirmed its support for Iraq’s “Arab and Islamic identity.” [MEMRI’s senior analyst considers the statement to be an insult to Talabani and the Iraqi foreign minister, Hoshyar Zibari, who are Muslims but not Arabs. Moreover, there is a large Christian and Assyrian minority in Iraq who will find the statement disturbing.]

In a strongly worded statement at the concluding session of the Arab summit meeting in Riyadh, President Jalal Talabani said the liberation of Iraq by the American forces has turned into an “occupation” with “horrible consequences” for the country.
