Egypt, Iran Move Towards Renewing Diplomatic Relations

Iranian parliamentary speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel said following a meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak that Mubarak had expressed to him a positive view on reinforcing Egypt-Iran relations.

Haddad-Adel added that renaming the Tehran street named after Khaled Islambouli, assassin of Egyptian president Anwar Al-Sadat, was a marginal matter that could be resolved, and that it was not an obstacle to normalization of bilateral relations.

Syrian Minister: We Have Long-Standing Brotherly Relations With Lebanese Presidential Candidate Sleiman

Syrian Information Minister Mohsen Bilal told a press conference that the Lebanon crisis is not a question of the proportion of seats in the future government, but a question of Lebanon's fate and of its not being exploited under the U.S.-Israeli project.

He said that Syria did not need to concede anything to the March 14 Forces in order to resolve the crisis.

In response to news that Syria was opposed to Lebanese military commander Michel Sleiman as a presidential candidate, he said Syria and Sleiman had had brotherly relations for years, and that Sleiman had even phoned the Syrian president, defense minister, and chief of staff recently.

However, Abd Al-'Alim Al-Abid, a spokesman for Arab League Secretary Amr Moussa, denied leaks that Syria had vetoed Sleiman's candidacy.

Arab League Sec'y Moussa: Lebanon Dispute Due To Interference By Regional Elements

At a press conference concluding his visit to Kuwait, Arab League Secretary Amr Moussia said that the dispute over the Lebanon crisis was being caused primarily by the interference of a number of elements in the region, and not by the argument over the proportions of government seats, over which the March 14 Forces and the opposition could arrive at a compromise.

He said that the Lebanese had to shoulder the responsibility of not becoming a pawn in the hands of the forces seeking to harm their country.

Lebanese Presidential Candidate Michel Sleiman: No Force In The World Can Harm Army-Hizbullah Relations

Leading Lebanese presidential candidate Michel Sleiman has said that the Winograd report proves that Israel acknowledges that it was the one to make the decision to launch a war on Lebanon with no justification.

He said that Israel's recognition of the war's failure underlines the joint victory of the Lebanese Army and Hizbullah, whose heroes fought with rare valor alongside the military and thus brought about the legendary defeat of the enemy.

Sleiman stressed that those who wish to harm the relationship between the Lebanese Army and Hizbullah must be prevented from doing so, and that no force in the world would ever shake this relationship, which is based on precious blood that has been spilled. He also condemned the arrogance of the Israeli enemy that does not hesitate to threaten to assassinate Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah, saying that these threats constituted threats on Lebanon and an attempt to harm its security and stability.
