Sudanese Censorship Abolished; President Tells Editors To Censor Papers

Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir ordered, on September 27, state security services to remove the censorship on newspapers.

At the same time, Bashir said that the removal of the censorship was conditional upon newspaper editors' censoring their own papers, and called on them to act with professional responsibility to prevent the publication of items harming the nation, its sovereignty, or its values.

He added that any paper that does not follow the rules of the journalistic code of honor will be harshly punished.

Teens Flogged In Saudi Arabia Following Disturbances

Saudi police flogged about 20 teenagers on September 29 for participating in disturbances in the eastern province of the Kingdom, including looting stores and breaking windows of businesses and restaurants.

Commentators pointed out that the incidents present Saudi authorities with challenges to provide social space for the population, in the form of athletic clubs and movie theaters.

Each of the teens received at least 30 lashes.
