Russia Wins Tender to Rebuild Egypt's Nuclear Program

Russia Industry and Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko told a Cairo press conference that Russia and Egypt were now preparing the documents for Russian-Egyptian cooperation on using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

He said that Egypt and Russia had in the past cooperated on nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, as well as on gas and oil.

The Egyptian opposition daily Al-Masryoon reported that Egyptian electricity and energy ministry sources said that according to these documents, Russia would set up three 600-megawatt nuclear power plants. The sources also indicated that in addition to Russian experts, experts from China and the U.S. could also be participating in the project.

Egyptian commerce and industry minister Muhammad Rashid yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding with his Russian counterpart, in the framework of which a million-square-meter Russian trade zone would be established at Burj Al-Arab. In it, parts for the nuclear plants would be manufactured, as well as airplane equipment and airplane and auto parts.
