Iranian Research Satellite Launched

Iran last night launched the domestically produced Omid ("Hope") satellite.
The launch came during the week that the country is marking the 30th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said, "The launch of the satellite strengthens the belief that every goal is attainable for the Iranian people, and that its launch, by the grace of God and the Hidden Imam, is an event that opens many opportunities to the Iranian nation."
Yesterday, Press TV quoted Iranian Aerospace Organization director Reza Taqipour as saying that the September 2007 launch of the satellite carrier, Safir 1, was the first step toward sending Omid into orbit, and that Omid "will be launched into space by the end of the year [i.e. by March 20]."
