According to media sources, including the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, on February 16, 2009 the Islamic Council of Norway denounced as "unacceptable" recent statements made by prominent Sunni Sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradhawi on Al-Jazeera TV, that the Holocaust was "divine punishment" and that he hopes that Muslims will carry out a second Holocaust against the Jews.
The council’s director promised to pursue a complaint with the European Council for Fatwa and Research, which Al-Qaradhawi heads.
Imams in Denmark and Sweden also condemned Al-Qaradhawi's statements. Leaders of regional Muslim organizations in northern Europe said that they would not allow values of hatred and intolerance to be dictated to them by imams in the Middle East.
