Iraqi Kurdish Newspaper Fined 13 Million Dinar For Insulting President

$1,000Kamal Rauf, editor of the Iraqi Kurdish paper Al-Watani, said on March 15 that following the lawsuit by Iraqi President Jalal Al-Talabani against the paper for publishing an article criticizing him, the Al-Sulaimaniya provincial court had fined the paper 13 million dinar [about $1,000].

Rauf said that the article was written by American journalist Michael Rubin on January 13, 2008, when Al-Talabani's assets were some $400 million.

The newspaper has appealed the decision.
