Water Disputes Could Lead to Tribal Wars in Southern Iraq

Water shortage in a number of Iraq’s southern provinces could lead to a new conflict in Iraq – a tribal war.

The problem is that water released by the central government from its Al-Hindiya Dam is overused by one province at the expense of other provinces, thereby causing a great harm to their agriculture.

[In the wake of dams construction on the Euphrates by both Turkey and Syria, water flow into Iraq has been reduced by as much as two-thirds, causing considerable shortage of water throughout Iraq.]
