In the first response from an official Al-Qaeda franchise to the clashes between salafi jihadists and Hamas in Rafah, Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) issued a communiqué sharply denouncing the Hamas movement and accusing it of creedal deviancy. The communiqué was posted on jihadist websites and bears the date of August 21, 2009.
