Iranian Women's Rights Activist Gets Two Years, 10 Lashes

An Iranian court has sentenced women's rights activist Delaram 'Ali to two years in prison, 10 months on probation, and 10 lashes.

'Ali, an activist for the Iranian campaign "Million Signatures to Change Discriminatory Laws" (see "Six Women's Activists Released On Bail; 27 More Still Being Held" ) was charged with violating public order and spreading propaganda against the regime, after she participated in a women's demonstration in June 2006.

Another activist, Mahboubeh Abassghali, editor of the women's quarterly Farzana, said that following repression by the Iranian regime, most of the offices of the women's movement offices had been shut down.
