Campaign to Bring Down Iraqi PM Al-Maliki’s Government
A campaign to bring down the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki is underway, led by Jalal al-Din al-Saghir, one of the leaders of the Supreme Islamic Council, and supported by Sadrists.
Both groups are partners in the governing coalition.
Al-Maliki is accused of failing to prevent the terrorist bombings which rocked Baghdad in recent weeks. Relations between Al-Maliki and his former partners have soured because of Al-Maliki’s refusal to rejoin the old coalition and his decision to run in the coming elections under a coalition of his own called "dawlat al-qanun" (State of Law).
Iranian Majlis speaker Ali Larijani is expected to arrive in Baghdad to meet with Iraqi officials. In his last visit to Iraq, Larijani failed to convince Al-Maliki to rejoin the old coalition, which is made up of Shi’ite political parties with strong ties to Iran.
Ali Al-Mousawi, information adviser to Al-Maliki, called the campaign "immoral" for seeking to place the blame for the bombings on the prime minister. He said that not even the U.S. military was able, prior to its withdrawal from the cities, to prevent terrorism.
