The compensation committee of the United Nations has disbursed to Kuwait, on October 29, the sum of $610 million as compensation for the damage incurred by Kuwait after it was invaded by Iraq in 1990.
In accordance with Security Council Resolution 256, the United Nations retains 5% of Iraq’s oil revenues to pay Kuwait and other affected parties and individuals who filed claims for compensation following the invasion.
So far, the committee has paid Kuwait and other parties a total of $28 billion, which is a little over half of the $52 billion that Iraq is obliged to pay in compensation for the invasion of Kuwait.
