First Execution On a Baghdad Street Since Saddam
Baghdad residents will witness the spectacle of the execution of a criminal who kidnapped an 11-year-old boy, collected a ransom, but burnt the boy's dead body with acid and left it in a bag not far from his family's home.
The criminal and the parents of the victim belong to two powerful tribes. Moreover, the parents are supported by the Badr militia while the Mahdi Army of Muqtada Al-Sadr stands behind the criminal's tribe.
Fearing armed clashes between the two tribes, Al-Maliki met with their sheikhs and reached an agreement according to which the criminal, at the behest of the father of the victim, will be hanged in front of the victim's home.
Mosques in the area are using loudspeakers to announce the coming hanging, which is to be the first in Iraq since the invasion.
[Saddam held frequent public hangings, often keeping the body on the gallows for days as a lesson to his potential opponents.]
