At a January 5 meeting with newspaper editors in Qatar, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said that the Qatari media were making false accusations against him, persistently siding with Hamas, and increasing the tension between the Palestinian Authority and Qatar.
Abbas asked International Union of Muslim Scholars head Sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradhawi, who resides in Qatar, to rescind the fatwa he issued against him on September 10, 2009 following the postponement of the U.N. discussion on the Goldstone Report.
Ahmad Al-Saliti, editor of the Qatari daily Al-Watan, wrote in response that the PA had launched a blatant media campaign against Qatar, which unhesitatingly supports the Palestinians, and that Qatar's journalists could not overlook the fact that the PA officials who are attacking Qatar had chosen the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera TV as the main means of presenting their stance to the world.
