The London daily Al-Hayat reported, citing a senior Palestinian official, that U.S. envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell had proposed to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud 'Abbas, during their January 24 meeting in Jordan, to conduct negotiations for a comprehensive peace in the region by means of shuttling between Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and the Palestinians.
Mitchell also pr0posed confidence-building measures between Israel and the Palestinians including transferring administrative and security control from Israel to the PA in several regions, removing checkpoints, and freeing prisoners.
