Reformists Ask Saudi King to Transform Kingdom Into Constitutional Monarchy

In a letter addressed to Saudi King Abdallah, a group of Saudi reformists and jurists asked the king to transform the kingdom into a constitutional monarchy.

While the group expressed its appreciation to the king for his "transparency and frankness," it nevertheless complained that human rights violations have transcended anecdotal cases into a widespread exercise of oppression and torture.

The message, which was posted on many Saudi websites, asserted that "the Saudi crown under the aegis of constitutional monarchy is the guarantee for the unity, security, and stability of the country." It warned that "the Saudi crown is not immune from storms and floods. If things are left as they are, there will be reactions whose consequences the state may not be able to control…"
