Lebanese President Announces Renewal Of National Dialogue Meetings, Beefs Up Opposition Representation

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman announced yesterday, February 28, that meetings of Lebanon's National Dialogue are being renewed.

The dialogue is aimed at drawing up a defense strategy for the country and to discuss what is to happen with Hizbullah's weapons.

There have been no meetings since July 2006, in advance of the parliamentary elections.

Suleiman has added to the dialogue new members from the opposition, who are close to Syria and Hizbullah: MP Suleiman Faranjiya, Talal Arsalan, Najib Miqati, and Syrian National-Social Party chairman As'ad Hardan.

The Lebanese daily Al-Nahar reports that the March 14 Forces oppose these changes in the dialogue membership, and that March 14 Forces general secretariat coordinator Fares Sa'id has demanded that the Arab League also participate in the national dialogue, as a counterbalance to the strong Syrian and Iranian representation.
