Iran Temporarily Frees U.S. Scholar Tajbakhsh for Nowruz Holiday

Tehran Prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi said Sunday that Iranian-American scholar Kian Tajbakhsh has been temporarily released, as the country prepares for festivities marking the Persian New Year.

"Tajbakhsh has gone on a 15-day break on $800,000 bail," Jafari Dolatabadi was quoted by ISNA as saying.

Tajbakhsh, a sociologist and former urban planning consultant with the Open Society Institute of U.S. financier George Soros, was arrested last July during a protest demonstration in Tehran.

He was sentenced in October to 12 years in prison for his role in the unrest that followed the presidential election in June, and for being a part of plot to overthrow the Islamic Revolution through a soft revolution.

In 2007, he was been charged with cooperation with the American association to topple the Islamic system.
