Contradictory Assessments Vis-à-Vis Egyptian-Syrian Reconciliation At Libya Summit

The Lebanese daily Al-Mustaqbal reports that the Arab peace initiative will head the agenda at the Arab summit in Libya at the end of the month.

Also to be discussed at the summit is the Palestinian issue, the situation in Iraq, Sudan, and Somalia, and disarming the Middle East of WMDs, as well as reform in the Arab League and a proposal for changing its name.

The paper assessed that in contrast to the report in the Egyptian government daily Al-Ahram, no Syrian-Egyptian reconciliation was expected at the summit, particularly given the fact that Saudi King Abdallah and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak are expected to be absent from the summit.

Al-Ahram also reported that there is overall Arab agreement that Egypt will lead the issue of the Palestinian reconciliation, with the help of other countries if necessary.
