Allawi Hints that Government May be Involved in his Assassination

Previous Iraqi prime minister Ayad Allawi, who is seeking the post once again, hinted in an interview with The Times of London that the government of Iraq may be involved in a scheme to assassinate him.

He said the government has refused to provide him with additional protection but that the U.S. has added, at his request, cement barricades around his residence.

Ali Al-Mousawi, information adviser to the prime minister, said that the accusations are "grave" but that it was incumbent on Allawi to provide the security agencies with "verifiable evidence."

[It should be pointed out that that two members of Allawi's Al-Iraqiya alliance were assassinated. Iran has been behind the alliance between the two Shi'a groups as a preventive measure against Allawi becoming prime minister.]
