In an October 29, 2010 ceremony in Damascus marking the anniversary of Saladin's conquest of Jerusalem, Hamas political bureau head Khaled Mash'al stated that the resistance and the jihad in the West Bank will soon be revived, and will restore Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa to the Palestinians.
Praising the residents of the Israeli Arab village Umm Al-Fahm who had clashed with police during a rally of right-wing Jewish activists in their village, Mash'al said that these residents had "given the Judaization and Israelization [policy a good] trampling," thus reconnecting with their Arab people and identity. He added that Umm Al-Fahm will be the starting point of the liberation of Jerusalem, and that, just as Mecca is the qibla (direction of prayer) in worship, Umm Al-Fahm is the qibla of jihad and resistance.
