In an interview on Al-Jazeera TV aired January 14, 2007, former U.S. president Jimmy Carter stated that most of the negative feedback to his book had come from "Jewish American organizations" and says that "what is going on against the Palestinian people... is, in my view, very similar, and in some cases even worse, than what happened to the blacks in South Africa."
He said that he "wasn't equating the Palestinian missiles with terrorism," but that "[such] acts of terrorism... are suicidal for the popularity and support for the Palestinian cause."
He added that last January, following the elections that Hamas won, he had urged the International Quartet "not to impose any kind of economic sanctions against the Palestinian people, but they decided to do so [anyway]."
