Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki hinted yesterday that he would dismiss the government if it failed to carry out the reform programs by the end of the 100-day time limit that he set on March 26.
[In a gross violation of the principle of separation of powers, al-Maliki said the dismissal of government would also include the dismissal of parliament.]
He said he could do so by calling for new elections.
Al-Maliki stressed that the country needs to spread an anti-corruption culture, starting with primary schools and through university, by benefitting from clerics, imams, preachers, political parties and organizations of civil society.
[Al-Maliki, however, did not offer himself to lead the anti-corruption campaign. A day earlier, it was announced that 37 employees in the prime minister's office, all of them members of his al-Da'wa party, had presented false education diplomas.]
