Former Libyan FM: Pakistani Scientists Assisted on Libyan Nuclear Program

Former Libyan foreign minister Abd Al-Rahman Shalqam, told the London daily Al-Hayat that former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf enabled Libya to purchase nuclear knowledge from Pakistani scientists.

He added that the Pakistani nuclear scientist Abd Al-Qadeer Khan was involved in the Libyan nuclear program, along with scientists from North Korea and other countries.

Shalqam also claimed that the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie in 1988 was Libya's revenge for the U.S. attack on Libyan leader Mu'ammar Al-Qadhafi's compound in 1986.

He claimed that Al-Qadhafi provided financial assistance to former Tunisian president Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali and former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak as part of the security coordination between Libya and the two countries. He also claimed that Al-Qadhafi tightened his relations with Iran, and even provided it with missiles to use against Iraq, due to his hostility towards Saddam Hussein.

Regarding Saudi Arabia, Shalqam said that the Al-Qadhafi saw it as his main enemy because of its wealth, status in the Arab and Muslim world, and its ties to the West. He added that Al-Qadhafi wanted to kill Saudi King Abdallah, who was then crown prince, and to incite leaders, including Jordanian King Abdallah, against Saudi Arabia.
