Al-Shabab Backs Down From Its Total Ban On Use Of Mobile Money Transfer (MMT), Sets Conditions For Use

On January 16, 2012, the Somali militant group Al-Shabab Al-Mujahideen published a statement setting out its requirements for Somalis' use of the Mobile Money Transfer (MMT) service. It states that Somalis may only use MMT within Somalia, for amounts not exceeding US$150 per transaction. These conditions are less stringent than those announced by the group in October 2010, when the entire service and its sponsor companies were banned from operating inside Somalia.
