Tunisian President To Try For New Constitutional Amendment To Keep Opposition Candidate From Presidency

Tunisian President Zin Al-Abidin Ben Ali has revealed his intention to introduce an amendment to the constitution under which a party with fewer than 20 MPs would only be able to have its leader, and no other member, run for the presidency.

Progressive Democratic Party chairman Maya Jribi said that the amendment was aimed at preventing the candidacy of Ahmad Nejib Chebbi, former chairman who was elected by the party institutions as its candidate for president.

A week ago, an issue of the party's paper Al-Mawqif was confiscated.
