Official Mauritanian spokesmen said that the gunmen with whom security forces clashed in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott last week had planned to carry out attacks on Westerners and on Mauritanian government institutions.
Two gunmen and a policeman were killed in the clashes.
Security forces are looking for three gunmen who fled.
