New Opposition Movement Forms in Egypt

A new umbrella organization named "April 6," has emerged in Egypt.

The organization is named after the date of an attempt to launch a general strike protesting against the political situation (see "Calls On Facebook For Egyptian General Strike Reaches 250,000").

The new organization has announced the establishment of a temporary council, the names of whose members have not been released, to replace Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak if he answers the call to step down.

The organization includes activists from across the opposition movements, from the Muslim Brotherhood to the Copts.

At the same time, a struggle continues on Facebook between supporters of the Egyptian government and supporters of the opposition over the call for a general strike on May 4 and for Mubarak to resign.
