At a turbulent session, the Egypt's People's Council decided to abolish several sections of the Children's Law already approved by the Shura Council – the sections regarding a mother's right to register her child in her own name and setting the minimum age for marriage for girls at 18.
The move was considered a victory by the conservative camp in the People's Council, which had vehemently opposed the sections, calling them counter to shari'a and to the customs of Egyptian society.
However, the People's Council did decide to ratify the section banning female circumcision.
