A March 1, 2007 editorial in the Iranian daily Kayhan, which is affiliated with Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, characterized the Islamabad Conference, attended by representatives of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Jordan, Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia, as a "conference of defeatists" which aims to harm Iran and which serves the interests of the U.S. and its supporters. The editorial mentioned that, on the day of the conference, several Iranian citizens were abducted and taken to Pakistan. This fact, said the editorial, proves that the conference is "an act of treason to the Islamic nation that cannot pass without comment, and which serves America's New Middle East plan." The editorial added that the topics discussed at the conference are confidential, but that information leaked from the conference nevertheless confirms that "America and its proxies and terrorist groups in the region" are striving to change the political map of the Middle East in various ways. The article also warned that the Middle East would not be "putty" in the hands of President Bush, King Abdullah of Jordan, Pakistani President Musharraf, the Taliban and the March 14 Forces in Lebanon.
