Sources to Kuwaiti Paper: Following Saudi-Iranian Summit, Syrian President Furious at Iran

The Kuwaiti paper Al-Siyassa reported that sources close to the Syrian presidential palace said that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad had phoned Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad following Ahmadinejad's return from the Saudi-Iranian summit meeting, to find out what had transpired there.

The sources said that the ensuing conversation had so angered Al-Assad that he reviled the Iranians, because what Ahmadinejad told Al-Assad did not match Al-Assad's expectations on the issue of Lebanon, particularly on the issue of the international tribunal for the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Al-Hariri.

The sources added that Assad's aides had tried to calm him, and managed to persuade him not to exacerbate relations with Iran at this time, but instead to think of ways of thwarting any Saudi-Iranian understanding on the crisis in Lebanon and the international tribunal.
