Syria Confirms It Is Mediating Between Iran, France
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki met July 17 in Damascus with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.
At the meeting, Assad updated Mottaki on France's positions regarding Iran's nuclear dossier, and said that he was convinced that dialogue and diplomacy were the only means to settle the matter.
Mottaki welcomed the role Syria was playing in the removal of tensions between the West and Iran over Iran's nuclear dossier.
At a joint press conference held by Mottaki and his Syrian counterpart Walid Al-Mu'alem, Al-Mu'alem said that French President Nicolas Sarkozy had not asked Syria to convey a message to Iran, but that Syria act in order to obtain clarifications from Iran that its nuclear program was for peaceful purposes only.
According to Al-Mu'alem, the senior Iranian officials confirmed that this was indeed the aim of the nuclear program.
Referring to the Israel-Hizbullah prisoner swap, Mottaki said that the release of the Lebanese prisoners and their return to Lebanon was a great victory for the Lebanese resistance.
