Kuwaiti Paper: Iran Told Hamas To Take Over PA Presidency

The Kuwaiti daily Al-Siyassa has reported that during a recent meeting in Damascus between top Syrian and Iranian officials and Hamas officials, Iran demanded that Hamas take over the Palestinian Authority presidency when current president Mahmoud Abbas completes his term in office in January 2009.

The paper said that the move was to be in preparation for a Hamas takeover of the West Bank and also to prevent agreements with Israel.

Also in the meeting, according to the report, Iran expressed disappointment at Hamas's increasing closeness to Jordan.
