Russian Economic Delegation in Damascus Discusses Oil Pipeline

A Russian economic delegation held meetings in Damascus yesterday to discuss methods of expanding Russia-Syria economic cooperation.

Among future projects discussed was the oil pipeline connecting Kirkuk in Iraq and Banias in Syria.

[The pipeline was used during the Saddam era to carry Iraqi oil to Syria in violation of U.N. sanctions. It is not clear how the pipeline, which is currently in disrepair, could be rebuilt without the approval of the Iraqi authorities and perhaps even the regional government of Kurdistan.]
