Iran Seeks To Join U.N. Security Council

The Iranian website Baztab has reported that Iran has announced to the U.N. Secretariat that it wishes to serve as a temporary member of the Security Council, beginning in the summer of 2009.

According to the report, Japan is its main rival for Security Council membership from Asia.

The report also stated that since Japan has already been a council member, and because of the law of rotation in temporary membership, Japan's push for membership is considered to be merely symbolic.
