Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has claimed responsibility for the attack on an army base in Nema, in eastern Mauritania, on the night of August 24, 2010. The communiqué, which was posted on jihadist websites, said that the attack was carried out in revenge for the "blood of the betrayed martyrs whom the tyrant [Mauritanian President] Ould Abdel Aziz offered up as a sacrifice to Sarkozy." The reference is to a joint Franco-Mauritanian raid against AQIM in July, in the wake of which the organization executed the French hostage Michel Germaneau.
