Egyptian Military Orders Parliament Disbanded, Constitution Suspended

In a fifth announcement, the Egyptian armed forces' supreme council stated that it had decided to stop operating according to the constitution and to disband the two houses of parliament - the People's Council and the Shura Council.

In the announcement, the supreme council said that it would run affairs of state during the next six months, and that the council head will represent the state instutions outside Egypt as well, and would speak on their behalf.

The announcement also said that the council had the right to issue orders that would have the status of law, and to amend some constututional articles.

The govenrment of Ahmad Shafiq will continue, the announcement said.
