Baztab Website: Why Khamenei Supports Ahmadinejad

In an editorial, the Iranian website Baztab, which is identified with Iranian Expediency Council secretary Mohsen Rezai, stated that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's resolute support for the government of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was aimed at preventing its fall.

Among the reasons Baztab gave for this support were: "the serious defeat of Ahmadinejad"s list in the December 2006 municipal elections," the West's challenge to Iran's international status in the nuclear crisis; and the disgrace of the crisis with the West following Ahmadinejad's statements on the Holocaust and on the destruction of Israel.
