Iraq has initiated an extensive program for developing the capacity of its border guards to limit incursions and violations from neighboring countries, particularly from Iran, and to put an end to the smuggling of narcotics and weapons and to the infiltration of elements that could be used in terrrist activities inside Iraq.
In a statement to Al-Arabiya satellite TV, Iraqi Brig.-Gen. Dhafer Nudhmi Jamal said that a number of entry points for infiltration and smuggling had been shut down by using round-the-clock patrols on the border, ambushes, and modern equipment such as heat-activated cameras and alert systems. He said that the main problem on the Iranian border is the loss of border markings as a result of the Iraq-Iran war in 1980-1988. A joint commission is currently dealing with demarcating the borders.
