Anti-Turban Protest Planned By Turkish Women; Their Slogan ‘222-A’

Members of over 35 women’s organizations supported by many cultural and educational associations, trade unions and other NGOs are preparing to rally tomorrow against the AKP and MHP efforts to lift the headscarf ban in universities through constitutional changes. Thousands of women are expected to participate in the demonstration on the 2nd day, of the 2nd month, at 2 o’clock at Anitkabir [222-A], the mausoleum of Ataturk, founder of modern Turkish Republic. Women organizers said that they will meet at Anitkabir, to show their dedication to preserve the principles of the Republic, in the spiritual presence of Ataturk, who granted Turkish women their rights and equal standing in society. The organizers said that the government’s efforts were politically oriented and aimed at changing Turkey’s secular and democratic regime and added that while there were more vital issues related to Turkish women such as illiteracy, deprivation from education, social pressures, honor killings, domestic violence etc., the government was doing nothing about them.
