Unsatisfied With AKP’s Turban Proposal Islamist Groups Want Freedom For All Islamist Attire - In Universities And Civil Service
The Islamist Ozgur-Der Association, known for their Friday demonstrations demanding freedom for Islamic headscarves, made a statement to express its dissatisfaction with lifting the turban-ban in universities. Ozgur-Der president Hulya Sekerci said that the draft bill made mention of “higher education institutions” whereas the freedoms should expand to public work places as well. Sekerci also opposed to the draft for specifying how the headscarf should be worn to prevent the wearing of chador, veil, and other Islamist garments. She said all kinds of Islamist attire [of both men and women] should be allowed, everywhere. Zeynep Piyade of Baskent Platform - another Islamist women’s organization - also found the proposed changes unsatisfactory. She said, “They should stop playing games with us. We don’t want the freedom to be limited to education only. What will happen in professional life? This ban should be lifted completely”. Source: Hurriyet, Sabah, Turkey, January 31, 2008
