Supreme Court Of Appeals Supports Chief Prosecutor: "Boundaries Of Legitimate Criticism Must Not Be Violated"
Hasan Gerceker, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals [Yargitay], issued a statement yesterday in response to the harsh criticism directed at the Chief Prosecutor Abdurrahman Yalcinkaya who filed the closure case against AKP. In his statement Gerceker said that the Chief Prosecutor has filed the case in fulfillment of his duties and has acted under the authority accorded to him by the Turkish Constitution. Gerceker said, "Every individual and institution has the right to make criticism, provided they don't violate the law or insult others. People should not force the boundaries of criticism". He asked the media to show the necessary care. The pro-AKP Islamist media has targeted the Chief Prosecutor in such severity that was defined by mainstream media as “lynching”. Members of the Supreme Court visited Yalcinkaya in his office, to support and congratulate him. Source: Milliyet, Sabah, Hurriyet, Cumhuriyet, Turkey, March 18, 2008
