Islam Based Gender Discrimination In Turkish Hospitals

Cumhuriyet reported that medical attendants, most of whom wear Islamic headscarves, that were trained for eight months refused to shake hands with the men who handed them their certificates. Questions are raised about how those female medical attendants,who don’t shake hands with men, will take care of male patients. Health organizations said that sexual discrimination related to religious beliefs is becoming more common. There are reports on covered female doctors, nurses and medical attendants who have refused to take care of male patients, causing serious health problems.

Increasing number of private hospitals advertise “Birth Services By Women Doctors”. The increasing number of covered women in public workplaces, such as hospitals, creates concerns about how such gender discrimination will affect daily life.
