Turkish Media Outrage: “AKP’s Revenge”;“Ilhan Selcuk At 84 And Sick, Taken Out Of Bed At 4:00AM And Not Allowed Legal Counsel For 24 Hours”

Dozens of columnists in Turkey’s mainstream media expressed outrage in their columns today at the fact that the prominent journalist/writer Ilhan Selcuk, considered as “dean” of Turkish media, was taken out of his bed at 4:00 AM and taken to custody when he could have been invited to come to answer questions. Selcuk who had been tortured at the time of military juntas in Turkey for being the voice of freedom and democracy, was not allowed to see a lawyer for 24 hours. There are concerns over his wellbeing, since the elderly writer has had two heart attacks. Turkish media describes yesterday as “a black day” for democracy, calls the move "witch-hunt" and asks the question “Who will be next, that the AKP wants to settle accounts with?” In an act of solidarity, some journalists asked to also be taken into custody. Cumhuriyet daily that appeared today with a black frontpage headliner that read, "We will not be silenced!" is flooded by many visitors and protesters carrying banners that say, "Ilhan Selcuk Is Turkey!".
