Professor Alemdaroglu In Hospital After His Release
Former president of Istanbul University Professor Kemal Alemdaroglu (70) was hospitalized on Tuesday, suffering from high blood pressure and chest pains, one day after he was released from custody. Alemdaroglu, who defended and strictly applied the Islamic headscarf ban in Istanbul University when he was the president in the late 1990s, was taken into custody at 4:00 AM last Friday, at the same time as the Workers' Party (IP) leader Dogu Perincek, and Cumhuriyet daily's senior columnist Ilhan Selcuk, as part of an investigation of a criminal gang. Alemdaroglu was released on Monday, pending trial, after three day of questioning. Chairman of Workers’ Party Perincek was arrested for allegedly being a leader of the shady “Ergenekon” organization and he remains in custody. After his release, Professor Alemdaroglu accused the government of trying to silence its opponents. Source: Hurriyet, TDN, March 26, 2008
