The 78 year old Islamist columnist Huseyin Uzmez was detained and later arrested in Bursa for repeated sexual assaults on an elementary school student. He has been writing for the radical Islamist Turkish daily Vakit for many years and he is a frequent guest at TV programs where he preaches Islamic morality and advocates for shari’a rule. Huseyin Uzmez had last married a woman 50 years younger than himself in 2003.
Uzmez is known to be the first armed Islamist activist in Turkey who in 1952 - when he was a high school student - had shot the prominent journalist Ahmet Emin Yalman, then the owner and chief editor of Vatan daily for his anti-Islamist views. He had served 10 years in prison for attempted murder and studied law after his release.
