Opposition Motion To Censure PM Erdogan
MPs of Turkey’s opposition parties CHP and MHP lashed at the AKP government for police violence that targeted workers on May Day in Istanbul. The Republican People's Party (CHP) accused Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan of violating workers rights, encouraging the police to use force and endangering public order. The motion for no-confidence vote that was submitted on Wednesday, is likely to be voted on in the coming weeks. It has, however, no chance of passing because Erdogan's party holds the parliamentary majority. Thousands of police in riot gear fired water cannons and tear gas canisters and charged at demonstrators trying to march to Istanbul's Taksim Square. The AKP government that rejected the unions’ demands to celebrate May Day in Taksim, has been under fire for the events resulting from the extraordinary security measures taken. The EU called on Tuesday for an investigation into the biggest outbreak of labor unrest in years. CHP submitted a second motion against PM Erdogan for his questionable conduct in the sale of Turkey's second largest media group Sabah-ATV and interference on behalf of the buyer, Calik group, where Erdogan's son-in-law is the CEO.
