Chief Of Turkey's High Administrative Court: "Europe Should Respect Our Judiciary"
Sumru Cortoglu, the chairperson of the Council of State [Danistay] responded to EU criticisms about the closure case against the ruling AKP. She said, "They should show the independent Turkish judiciary the same respect they show to their own judicial organs, lawsuits and verdicts." Speaking at the 140th anniversary of the founding of the Council of State on Saturday, Sumru Cortoglu criticized the comments and statements of EU officials concerning the closure case filed against the Justice and Development Party (AKP), and gave important messages on secularism. Cortoglu said, “We consider wrong the attempts from both domestic and international circles at directing and influencing Turkish judicial institutions on issues already passed to the judiciary” and she added, “We expect them to show the same respect to the independent Turkish judiciary, which decides on behalf of the Turkish nation, that they show to judicial organs and their decisions in their own countries. This is what democracy and independence of the judiciary requires.” Source: Milliyet, Vatan, Turkish Daily News, May 11-12, 2008
