Internal Security Adviser: Pakistan Will Not Become Taliban State
According to a report in the Urdu-language newspaper Roznama Jang, Rehman Malik, the Internal Security Adviser to the Pakistani prime minister, has stated that ‘‘Pakistan will not be allowed to become a Taliban state.’’
Reacting to near-total failure of the Pakistani state in the Taliban-controlled Swat district, Malik added: ‘‘The situations in Swat will improve in two weeks.’’
His statement is likely to be seen as the Pakistani government’s move to launch an army operation against the Taliban.
The Taliban have imposed total ban on female education in the Swat district from January 15, 2009 and have ordered men to wear caps and not to shave beards from January 25, 2009.
Across the region, the Taliban have also set up Shari’a courts in their drive to create an Islamic state.
Malik told a conference in Islamabad that the terrorists are getting money and weapons from foreign enemies.
He disclosed that the Taliban are paying 10,000 Pakistani Rupees as monthly salary to their fighters.
